Stock screening is the process of filtering through a list of stocks based on a pre-defined set of criteria. While this process can be done manually, many trading platforms offer free and/or paid packages that allow their clients to automate the process by building their stock screeners in the platform for one-click access. Depending on the platform, traders can have an infinite amount of stock screening filters that correspond to individual or combined trading strategies.
Stock screeners are very similar to the filter feature on most retail websites or spreadsheet software products. Instead of filtering which items you want to look at for purchase or a specific month of sales data, the user is filtering stocks based on a wide variety of criteria. And just like the filters mentioned above, individual stock screening filters can be applied on top of one another to limit the amount of stocks for final review.
