What is free cash flow (FCF)?

Free cash flow (FCF) is a measure of the cash that an organization has on hand after accounting for any cash outlays that pay for ongoing operations and asset purchase and maintenance.  Because it combines items from both the income statement and balance sheet, it helps analysts and traders identify potential problems within a corporation before they show up in other, more standard reports.
