What are options?

Options are derivative contracts that derive their value from an underling asset. They give the right to either buy or sell a set amount of an underlying asset at a predetermined price at or before the options expiration. Buyers of options have the right to execute the contracts but not the obligation. Option sellers have the obligation to fulfill the contract, either buying or selling the underlying security, if the contract is executed by the buyer.
